Currently InterContinental Hotels IHG are running a great promotion where you can stay at one of their properties for just 5000 points per night. And every travel blogger is writing off their keyboards about it.
Typically IHG’s properties are listed for a lot more points per night and usually their redemption rates are some of the worst out there, you’re looking at around 0.7cent/point. With so much blogging coverage out there today literally regurgitating the same IHG’s website information I thought I’d write about some blatant limitations of this offer and what your family can do to actually use it to benefit the travel itinerary.
Few negatives worth considering:
- Docmestically their “premium” chains such as Crown Plaza rarely, if ever make a list
- IHG has a language with a cap of 2 redemption nights per stay
- Large selection of hotels seem to be targed to business travelers and are around commercial/airport areas
The third point is where you can actually get a great deal — Two years ago we went on a cruise and because of flight/cruise schedule we had to stay one night at the port town, in this case Tampa. IHG at that time was running the same promotion for a stay at the Holiday Inn that was by the aiport, typically the property was listed at $100+ a night so this was a great value.
So my suggestion would be to hunt the website for a discount luxury stay — I’m pretty sure the IHG people have already done their statistical analysis and made it so no luxury traveler would be able to get ahead on this deal, but where the opportunities lie is that you can actually find an aiport deal to either utilize a lay-over or a stay during a cruise that you can leverage.
